Mazi Mediterranean Restaurant
June 2023
Mazi is a celebration of Mediterranean culture, where design and dining come together in harmony. The deep, rich palette of blue, orange, green, and brown creates an atmosphere that feels timeless yet vibrant, grounding the space in both history and modernity.
From the start, the design process was rooted in materiality. Red onyx, adobe clay, slate, zellige tile, terracotta, and bronze fixtures layer together to form a textured, immersive environment. Each element was chosen to reflect a balance of authenticity and innovation, echoing the heritage of the Mediterranean while giving it a fresh voice.
As someone with Greek roots, I saw this project as an opportunity to explore and modernize my culture through design. Rather than recreating the past, my goal was to reinterpret the traditions I grew up around—drawing inspiration from ancient art, architecture, and craft, and reimagining them in a way that feels relevant and alive today.
The layout of Mazi reinforces that spirit of connection. A bold bar anchors the interior, while custom booths, a banquette, standing tables, and a feature community table offer guests a variety of ways to experience the space. At the heart of the restaurant, a dramatic central column rises upward, creating a sculptural focal point that emphasizes both strength and fluidity. Timeless furniture grounds the design, ensuring comfort without sacrificing sophistication.
Designed for South Beach Miami, Mazi reflects the city’s vibrant energy while channeling the flavors and spirit of the Mediterranean. The concept was built around the culinary vision of chef Ana Sortun, whose approach to Mediterranean cuisine inspired a space where bold materials, rich color, and layered tradition meet contemporary dining.
The result is a restaurant where the old world and new world meet—where mythology, craft, and contemporary design are woven together to create a dining experience that is both rooted and forward-looking.
