Laguna Beach Public Library
July 2023
The Laguna Beach Public Library is more than a library—it is a sanctuary designed to ignite the artistic passions of young minds and nurture a deeper connection with the arts and self. Catered specifically to teenagers, the space blends learning, creativity, and community, offering an environment where self-expression and personal growth can flourish.
The interior design is inspired by Laguna Beach’s coastal artistry and natural surroundings. Earthy finishes, warm woodwork, and stone ground the space in authenticity, while stained glass, greenery, and biophilic details add vibrancy and calm. Natural daylight pours in through expansive windows, balanced by a palette that mixes calming neutrals with energizing pops of color. This layering reflects the dual needs of teenagers—spaces for play and performance, as well as refuge and reflection. Beyond aesthetics, the project was envisioned as a cultural landmark rather than a traditional library. A café, auditorium, arts studios, and community garden expand its role as a hub for creativity and connection. Amenities like a donation closet and recreational lounge extend its reach, making the library a place of support as much as exploration.
Accessibility and human factors were at the heart of the design. Universal design principles, ergonomic seating, acoustically balanced rooms, and intuitive layouts ensure comfort and usability for all. Assistive technologies—from braille embossers to tactile tablets—further break down barriers, making the space inclusive for every teen.
The Laguna Beach Public Library is an artistic haven where teens can explore, connect, and thrive. By weaving together thoughtful interiors, inclusive design, and opportunities for community engagement, it demonstrates how design can be both beautiful and transformative.
