Victorian Cottage

Charlotte and Abigail are a newly engaged couple relocating from Alabama to California, eager to create a home that balances warmth, creativity, and sophistication. Charlotte, who works in tech sales, often unwinds with yoga, gardening, and reading before bed, while Abigail, a children’s book illustrator, spends her days working from home on canvas and paper. Their home needed to reflect these individual routines while also supporting their shared love of hosting intimate gatherings and creating a welcoming space for new community in California.

The design vision blends the rustic charm of cottage style with the elegance of Victorian detailing. Natural materials and a soft, neutral base reflect the simplicity of cottage living, while ornate wallpapers, chandeliers, and plush furnishings layer in Victorian richness. The result is a home that feels cozy yet elevated—dainty in scale, detailed in finish, and perfectly suited to the couple’s personalities.

Lighting became a central focus of the design process, shaped directly by the couple’s lifestyle. For Charlotte, dedicated task lighting was integrated into the bedroom to complement her nightly reading routine. For Abigail, a bright and flexible studio space was essential, designed to maximize natural light while allowing for movable fixtures, easels, and desks to adapt to her creative process. Throughout the home, ornate fixtures with gold finishes add a layer of refinement, while the use of natural sunlight enhances the cottage-inspired palette. Together, these lighting choices ensure the house is not only functional but also alive with atmosphere.
